Tips for using the app: How to make the most of the WeatherRadar (2024)

Come rain or shine, do you know all these tips and tricks to get the most out of your WeatherRadar?

Here, we will walk you through all the features available to you in the WeatherRadar, so that you can prepare for any weather.

Did you know, the WeatherRadar is an interactive map that allows you to explore weather conditions at any location in the world?

There are several layers of information in the map that help you to decode the conditions and understand when you can enjoy some dry moments outdoors. You can locate it on the homepage as the top map displayed, just below your location.

Once you open the WeatherRadar, you can visualise precipitation (type and intensity), lightning strikes, cloud coverage and temperatures all on a worldwide map.

In the WeatherRadar both intensity and type will determine the colours. Rain is shown in blue, but when heavy rainfall is occurring or forecast, the colour darkens to a purple hue. Now you can spot the difference between drizzle and heavy rain!

Snow is shown as light to dark pink, depending on the snowfall rate. Ice pellets and freezing rain will be shown in a reddish-orange colour.

Lightning strikes are shown live as yellow or orange circles of different sizes. The bigger the circles, the more strikes were detected at this location - up to a big orange circle for really frequent lightning.

Clouds in the WeatherRadar are of varying grey hues and have semi-transparency, so that you can get a realistic picture of what the weather "looks" like on the ground and just how much sun might be getting through. The temperature is displayed on the map as well.

Alongside the WeatherRadar, there is also the RainfallRadar, depicted by the raindrops icon. This radar shows only the precipitation intensity and can be found in the icon bar to the right-hand side of the map.

Viewing only the intensity can help you see if a particularly heavy burst of rain may be on its way, or if you need to be seeking cover. You will also find the TemperatureRadar, WindRadar and LightningRadar to choose from, by simply selecting its corresponding icon.

The WeatherRadar also now showcases live lightning strikes, real-time. The strikes will appear as circles and grow with a red outline initially, before fading to the black outline after a few minutes.

You can either play the selected time period by pressing the play arrow, or drag the slider bar to control the movement of the map yourself, which will play it through hour-by-hour so you can see what's to come. You can also go back in time 24 hours too!

Zoom in and out using two fingers, showing more locations and detail as you zoom, plus move around the world by dragging the map with just one finger.

You can see the weather "now" and up to three days ahead by switching time periods in the menu below in order to get a clearer visual idea of the forecast for the days ahead, as an alternative to the "Forecast" section on your homepage.

Did you know that you can add the WeatherRadar widget to your phone's home screen? The live WeatherRadar or weather for your location can be displayed, with immediate access to the app by tapping the image.

There are several different types and sizes available, which you can find by editing your widget home screen and clicking the plus to get to the WeatherRadar. Available for Android and iOS.
