The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

Taste The Plain Dealer Breaking news: cleveland.com Wednesday, August 15, 2012 RESTAURANT ROW Respect for traditions a main course at Sterle's More than 50 years of business tends to pack a place with traditions and memories. So when developer Rick Semersky took over Sterle's Slovenian Country House in JOE March, one of his main CREA intentions was to preserve its best traditions. "Our Friday and Saturday nights are great, fun nights at the restaurant," he says, "and wasn't about to do anything to mess that up." His hope in maintaining the Cleveland landmark, Semersky adds, is to "honor and respect all that is great about Sterle's and at the same time introduce it to those who have yet to experience it." So Semersky is keeping Sterle's menu largely intact, but with a few adjustments. "We've tweaked a lot, removed a few things that just weren't selling, and corrected: a couple major problems. Namely, Sterle's is known for chicken paprikash but for a long time, it wasn't always offered.

Now it's on the menu every day," he says. Sterle's is also introducing: a new Thursday-night special, Not Your Grandma's Schnitzel. Patrons can choose from five versions of the famed cutlet dish traditional veal or chicken, Angus beef, tilapia or eggplant as well as breads and side dishes, for $9.75. Guests can then load up their plates from a new condiment bar. Semersky is also honoring Sterle's beer-hall tradition by emphasizing a larger selection of local brews.

"There are now 12 craft brews on tap, including Cellar Rat and Great Lakes Brewing Co. beers," he says. Semersky is tuning up the restaurant's beer and wine selection while pushing a p.m. daily happy hour with drink and food cials. Relax, regulars.

Traditional Friday and Saturday polka nights will live on with most of the oldschool bands that have been pumping the oompah for generations. "But for a generation of Clevelanders who haven't experienced Sterle's yet, on Thursday nights starting Aug. 23 through Oct. 18 we're bringing a new series of bands in," Semersky says. DJ Kishka, Harmonia, Cats on Holiday and the Chardon Polka Band are all on the schedule.

ROSEWOOD A much-anticipated second Rosewood Grill opened last week in Strongsville. The rooms. are hopping in the city's Plaza at SouthPark shopping center. "We hit construction within one day of our projection," said operating partner George Schindler in a text message. The ner of Chagrin Boulevard and Richmond Road, behind Charter One Bank, features "rustic Italian cooking," says staff member Dale Morrison.

In addition to an antipasto counter, a 50-seat piano bar (featuring an 1856 Chickering grand piano) and a pair of patios one for smokers, the other for nonsmokers pizza will be a house specialty. "We have a Stefano Ferrara Neapolitan pizza oven, imported from Italy," says Morrison. Pizzas. are made to order. A selection of wines is available.

"A well-roasted chicken is the mark of a fine cook," she wrote in "Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home" (Knopf, $40), a cookbook she co-authored with celebrity chef Jacques Pepin. Another favorite is Child's advice on preparing the chicken. "I always give my bird a generous butter massage before I put it in the oven. Why? Because I think the chicken likes it and, more important, I like to give it." You gotta love it. In honor of Child, I'll probably watch the 2009 movie "Julie and Julia" and salivate over the sole meuniere that Child, played by Meryl Streep, gushes about.

"Bon appetit!" Eggplant and Zucchini Gratin Makes 8 servings restaurant's sudden opening, he adds, was decided when staff readiness appeared solid. Affordability is a big push, with a "20 dinner choices under $20" promotion. Dinners only are on the docket for now; eventually, Rosewood will offer lunch. Now that the restaurant has finally opened, Schindler adds, "my summer has officially begun and Chris Kneeland's has officially ended." You could call her the original top chef she not only deciphered French cooking techniques, but brought them to us through TV.

Child didn't find her calling until she was in her late 30s and living in Paris. There, she enrolled in the famed Le Cordon Bleu cooking school and later joined a cooking club, where she met Louisette Bertholle and Simone Beck, Child's coauthors of the groundbreaking "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" (Knopf, $40). She had a passion for cooking and good food and that shows in many recipes. She was also a great teacher who made cooking look easy and explained everything to the very last detail. Sprinkle slices lightly with teaspoon of salt and teaspoon pepper. Assemble: Coat a gratin or shallow baking dish with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and sprinkle a teaspoon of the herbes de Provence all over the bottom. CRACK ONE OPEN HARPOON Bohemian Pilsner MARC BONA Assistant Entertainment Editor Today's pick hit: Harpoon Bohemian Pilsner. Summer continues, and that means trying pilsners, which al: ways seem better this time of year. If there's one style that went from bland and boring to experimental and flavorful over the last couple of decades, this is it. Beers using Czech Saaz hops have a unique grainy flavor.

There's a slightly bitter (but not bad) aftertaste in this pilsner, which has decent body. A rep suggests pairing this with barbecued pork or spicy black-bean burgers. The beer brewed by Harpoon Brewery in Boston and Windsor, Vermont is a low 4.7 percent alcohol. Why hoist one: Say "Happy Birthday" to Kerri Walsh Jennings, one half of the recent gold-medal winning beach-volleyball duo in London. She turns 34 today.

On this date in 1993, Nolan Ryan recorded his 324th, and final, victory in Texas' 4-1 win over Cleveland. And on this date in 1950, the host Indians lost to the Tigers, also by a 4-1 score, but the Tribe turned a triple play. Label: Simple design of four bunches of hops, with a wonderful slogan: "Love beer. Love life." What you'll pay: A rep says this is available in the Harpoon Summer Vacation Mix 12-pack for SUSAN M. SELASKY.

NOBILO REGIONAL COLLECTION MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANCH 2011 NEW ZEALAND DONALD ROSENBERG Plain Dealer Reporter This week's buy: Nobilo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011. Sauvignon blanc receives special handling in the Northern Hemisphere in France and the United States.

Below the equator, no country is more amenable to the varietal than New Zealand, which offers the wine in styles ranging from tart and intense to fragrant and graceful. Among the venerable makers of sauvignon blanc in New Zealand's heralded Marlborough region is Nobilo, named after the late Nikolo Nobilo, a Croatian immigrant who established his winery in 1943, now run by family members. The company also produces pinot noir, another specialty of the region. Nobilo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011 has citrus and herbaceous scents that lead to fairly full, round fruit with lemon undertones and good acidity. The finish is clean and lean.

It's fine for sipping but even better with summer fare. Price: $11.99. Where we found it: The wine is widely available. Pairings: Poultry, fish, summer salads, appetizers and assorted cheeses. Each week, Rosenberg highlights a moderately priced wine worth trying.

Listed retail prices are based on state of Ohio minimums. 2. WE To reach this Plain Dealer reporter: 216-999-4269.
